Improve Credit

Build a record lenders can evaluate.

01

Understand the difference

A credit report records borrowing and repayment information. A credit score is calculated from report data using a particular scoring model. You have multiple potential scores, and a lender may use a different version from an app. Improving the underlying record is more useful than focusing on daily point changes.

02

Review the reports

Use AnnualCreditReport.com to access reports from the nationwide credit reporting companies. Check identifying details, account ownership, balances and payment history. Dispute inaccurate information with the reporting company and the business that furnished it, keeping copies of evidence and responses. Accurate negative information generally cannot be removed simply because someone charges a fee.

03

Build the habits

Pay required bills on time and keep revolving balances low relative to limits. Utilization is the reported balance divided by available credit. A $500 reported balance on a $2,000 limit is 25%. Both individual-card and overall utilization may matter. Lower utilization can help, but there is no universal percentage that guarantees a score or an increase.

04

Choose new accounts carefully

Apply only for credit you need and can manage. A secured card may help establish a record if the issuer reports to the bureaus; compare fees and deposit terms. Do not take an expensive loan just to create an account mix. Closing an old card can reduce available credit, but fees, overspending risk and account security also matter.

05

Protect progress

Set reminders, maintain a payment buffer and verify autopay after account changes. A security freeze can help restrict new credit being opened using your file; contact each bureau and plan to lift freezes when applying. No one can promise an exact score gain or timetable. If debt payments are unaffordable, address the budget and ask creditors about assistance rather than buying a quick-fix promise.
